Scholarship Notice
Updated February 1, 2008

United Auto Workers Local 571 is pleased to announce the availability of six (6) annual John F. Saffomilla and E. Roy Colville Scholarship Awards of $2,000 each to graduating high school seniors, pursuing a higher education, who meet the qualifying guidelines.

Eligibility to apply for these scholarship awards is limited to graduating high school seniors whose parent or legal guardian is a Local 571 member in good standing. Applications for the year 2008 scholarship awards are available from your grievance representative.

The following guidelines will prevail in selecting the recipients and awarding the scholarships:

  1. All applications must be received, by mail only, at the MDA-UAW Office, P. O. Box 7275, Groton, CT 06340, Attn: Recording Secretary, no later than Thursday, May 1, 2008. No hand-carried applications will be accepted.
  2. All timely applications will be reviewed and six recipients will be selected by an impartial committee of three nonmembers of the Union. Incomplete or late applications will not be processed.
  3. The scholarship awards will consist of six awards of two thousand dollars ($2,000) each.
  4. One (1) runner-up will be selected by the impartial committee in the event one of the winners becomes disqualified.
  5. Upon proof of enrollment, the $2,000.00 awards will be mailed directly to the college that each winner attends.

Each student applicant's high school academic and social achievements are the most important considerations in choosing the winners; however, it should be noted that in the selection process a significant emphasis and/or tie breaker factor will be placed on the financial need of the students.

Student applicants should take care to provide all the information requested of them on the application form. Additionally, they should check with their high school guidance departments in sufficient time prior the deadline to ensure that their school has forwarded the requested data to our scholarship committee. The deadline for the return of application forms and supporting data from school guidance departments is May 1, 2008 and is firm.

Fraternally,

John A. Worobey, Jr.
President
