Continuing a tradition that dates back to the early
1970's, scholarships have been awarded this year by our union to children of
its members. The scholarship program has evolved from the granting of one
$500 award by the Marine Draftsmen's Association, Port of New London, to its
current total of six John F. Saffomilla and E. Roy Colville
awards of $2,000 each.
Selected from a commendable pool of candidates,
recipients of the 2005 scholarships will attend various colleges in
Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Georgia: Julie R. Comforti, a Westerly
High School graduate, will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design;
Stephanie A. Edwards, a graduate of Waterford High School, will attend
the University of Connecticut; Zachary T. Henry, a Wheeler High
School graduate, will attend the New England Institute of Technology;
Jill A. Holman, a Robert E. Fitch Senior High School graduate, will
attend Fairfield University; Alexander V. Melesko, a graduate of East
Lyme High School, will attend the University of Connecticut; and
Stephanie E. Sammataro, who graduated from Stonington High School, will
attend the University of Connecticut.
Best wishes to all who applied and plan to pursue a
higher education. As with most aspects relating to college, a selection
process is involved. In the awarding of scholarships a limited number of
students will prevail but, nevertheless, many of those applying are
definitely worth of the recognition. While everyone can't win, it is still
wise to apply. Congratulations to our recipients and our very best wishes to
all for continued success at school. |
