Who We Are

MDA-UAW Local 571 has had a long history as a labor organization. It was founded as the Marine Draftsmen's Association. Port of New London, on December 18, 1939 as the collective bargaining agent for the designers, draftsmen, technical aides and engineering support clerical personnel at the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut.

The Electric Boat Company subsequently became the cornerstone of General Dynamics Corporation with the advent of the nuclear submarine in the early 1950s and has since been the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation. Read more...

Year in Review - 2009

The year 2009 starts with a move for some of our members, Triennial elections and the Company moves to implement a new Tobacco Free Policy. The Local had an apprenticeship class graduate and another year of the school-to-career program. With opportunities for more work coming to EB we look forward to the New Year with optimism. Cooperative Program Allows Designers To Complete Apprenticeships

Electric Boat, the MDA-UAW and Three Rivers Community College (TRCC) have established a partnership that enables designer apprentices to earn associate’s degrees in engineering technology while the company pays the cost.

The five-year program includes more than 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, more than 2,000 hours of design-specific instruction and 720 hours of classroom training.

Main Maritime AcademyElectric Boat and the MDA-UAW have reached an agreement with Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) to offer design apprentices an Associates Degree program in Ship Systems Design Technology. The program is being offered to current EB design apprentices who have successfully completed the apprentice curriculum. Read more...
