UAW Local 571 sponsored its sixth annual golf tournament on Saturday, September 25, 1999 at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course in East Lyme, CT. As in past years, the tournament was well supported with approximately 200 players and volunteers taking to the greens. It was a super day except for a brief shower in the morning with temperatures reaching into the high 70's under sunny skies. Players enjoyed coffee, juice and donuts prior to their tee times and were greeted by President Mel Olsson and volunteer Joanne Basile who presented each golfer with a golf towel and sleeve of golf balls sporting the MDA-UAW submarine logo. As with all previous tournaments, Joanne's services in getting team photos, adding score cards, posting scores on our huge union leader board and helping to keep everything organized were greatly appreciated.
After completion of 18 holes of golf, members enjoyed a cookout with our chefs, Bob SanJuan and Dave Bliven. Upon conclusion of the tournament, plaques were awarded to First, Second and Third place winners. "Closest to the Pin" winners received marble paper weights, and the "Hackers" award winners received trophies and plastic bats and balls so they can take up a new sport! A raffle was held with winners receiving gift certificates and merchandise from the Prop Shop.
It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. On behalf of the tournament committee, we would like to thank all the members who participated in the event along with volunteers Joanne Basile, Art Dewolf, Al Clarke, Dave Bliven, Bob SanJuan, Bill Larkin, Pete Johnson, John Worobey, Joe Harcut, Mel Olsson, Bob Canova, and Scott Riccitelli. They did a great job of setting up, cooking and cleaning up afterwards to make the tournament such a huge success.
